A refund for a purchase made with a gift card usually returns to the original gift card or the account balance funded by it. It does not automatically become cash or return to a bank card. The exact destination and timing depend on the merchant, card issuer, country, and whether the gift card had already been redeemed to an account.

Follow the original payment path
Think of a refund as reversing the purchase, not converting the payment method. If an order used only gift-card balance, the merchant will commonly credit that stored value. If an order used gift balance plus a debit card, the merchant may split the refund across the original methods.
That general rule is not a promise. Promotional credits, prepaid bank cards, marketplace gift balances, and third-party cards can have different terms. Google Play’s current policy, for example, says gift cards and prepaid Play balance generally are not refundable or transferable except where law or specified exceptions apply.
Four states people often confuse
| State | What it means | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant approved refund | The seller accepted the return | Refund confirmation and destination |
| Refund processing | The credit was initiated | Merchant timeline and reference |
| Balance restored | Value appears on the card/account | Official balance or transaction history |
| Cash refund requested | You want another payment method | Issuer/merchant terms; do not assume eligibility |
“Refund approved” does not necessarily mean the balance has updated. Save the approval email, order number, amount, and the last four digits or account reference—never the full redeemable code.
What if you no longer have the card?
Do not discard a physical or email gift card after spending it. Some merchants require the original card to access a returned balance. If it is missing, contact support before the refund completes and ask exactly how the credit will be delivered.
For an account-redeemed card, check the same account used for the purchase. Looking at a different profile can make a completed refund appear missing.
Can you sell a card while a refund is pending?
That creates an avoidable dispute. The balance can change after submission, and the buyer cannot know whether a pending credit or debit is final. Wait until the merchant’s stated window has passed and the official balance or account history shows a settled amount.
If the refund creates a new voucher or store credit, verify whether it is transferable. A balance tied to your account is not automatically a reusable gift card.
A clean escalation path
- Confirm the merchant approved the refund and note the stated payment destination.
- Wait through the merchant’s published processing window.
- Check the original card or account using the issuer’s official tool.
- Contact the merchant with the refund reference if the value is absent.
- Contact the card issuer only when the merchant confirms it sent the credit.
Avoid paying a “release fee” to someone claiming they can unlock the refund. Review a platform on The Legit List and read our guide to fake payment screenshots if someone uses an image as proof that money was returned.
Before estimating resale value
Use only the settled balance. Then confirm brand, issuing country, physical versus digital form, and receipt status. The Gift Card Rate Calculator provides an estimate from current inputs; it does not verify refunds or guarantee acceptance.
Bottom line
Trace the refund back to the original payment path, keep the card and records until the balance settles, and do not trade disputed value. Merchant confirmation plus an official balance check is stronger than a screenshot or chat promise.
